Bathroom windows create a constant compromise: natural light versus privacy. The standard solution — blinds, curtains, or frosted film — introduces maintenance and moisture damage in a high-humidity environment.
Glass block eliminates the compromise. See our full bathroom window options. Strong privacy, beautiful natural light, highly moisture-tolerant, and minimal upkeep. No blinds to clean, no curtains to wash, no film to replace when it peels.
Wondering whether glass block is outdated for bathroom use? We addressed that directly in our honest take.
Choosing a pattern is really about the sightline. Pick based on the most exposed angle — not what you see standing directly in front of the window from inside.
Ice Pattern (Most Popular for Bathrooms) — Excellent privacy while transmitting the most light of any obscured pattern. Heavy texture makes it very difficult to identify shapes or details from outside. Our top recommendation.
Frosted/Satin — Smooth, uniform obscuring with a clean minimalist look. Spa-like aesthetic. Slightly less light transmission than ice.
Wave Pattern — Mid-level privacy with distinctive curved texture. Best for bathrooms that do not face close neighbors or heavy foot traffic.
Diamond Pattern — Bold geometric texture with good privacy. Less common in bathrooms but striking when used intentionally.
Clear — Not recommended for bathrooms. Insufficient privacy for most applications.
For most Ohio bathrooms, we recommend ice or frosted. Both provide strong privacy day and night.
Bathrooms generate more humidity than any other room. Steam from showers can damage vinyl frames, rot wood, and promote mold growth in window cavities and around frame joints.
Glass block and mortar are inorganic materials that hold up very well in humid environments. They will not rot or rust, and the assembly is highly moisture-tolerant. Keeping surfaces clean helps prevent mildew buildup on any surface residue.
Hopper vents open inward from the top, allowing humid air to escape while maintaining privacy. The opening angle helps prevent anyone outside from seeing in. Most popular bathroom option.
Slider vents offer a low-profile horizontal opening for smaller windows or above-tub installations.
We recommend at least one vent in any bathroom glass block installation to help manage moisture. Make sure the vent is installed so it seals tightly when closed and does not become a weak point.
Modern installations create a clean, contemporary, spa-like atmosphere with diffused natural light. Popular applications include window replacements, shower enclosures and half-walls (see /shower-walls/ and our shower design guide), and transom windows above showers for additional light.

With ice or frosted patterns, you cannot make out identifiable details from outside—even with bathroom lights on. You will see light and vague shapes, nothing more. These patterns provide excellent privacy day and night.
Glass is non-porous and the mortar assembly holds up extremely well in humid environments. Glass block is far less prone to moisture damage than wood or vinyl. Regular surface cleaning prevents any mildew buildup from soap residue or steam.
Yes. A properly installed mortar-set glass block window handles direct water contact with no issues when the waterproofing details are done correctly. See /shower-walls/ and our shower design guide.
A single bathroom window typically installs in 1 to 2 hours, including removal of the old window, opening prep, installation, sealing, and cleanup.
More than you would expect. Glass block diffuses light beautifully, so your bathroom often feels brighter than it did with a standard window that had curtains or blinds drawn for privacy.
